Home remedies for treating frostbiteas well as tips for prevention of frostbite

Most people think of frostbite as a cold-weather hazard. But the air doesn’t have to be all that cold for person to get frostbite. High winds can reduce temperatures to dangerously low levels, what we know as the windchill factor. So even if the thermometer says 20 degree F, a 40 mile-per hour wind can create a windchill index of 20 degree F conditions. And frostbite can happen in temperatures of just 10 degree.
Your hands, feet, ears, nose and other extremities are the first to feel the chill. Once your skin freezes, small icy crystals form and destroy the skin cells. This causes your blood to clot, cutting off circulation to the area. Your flesh harden, your skin becomes waxy and white, and you lose all feeling in the affected area.
If you suspect that you have frostbite, treat it immediately by following these steps. And see your doctor as soon as possible you can’t tell how serious the damage is just by looking at your skin.
Seek shelter:
If you notice your skin turning waxy white, get inside before frostbite develops in other areas. If you can’t head indoors and you are with someone, cozy up to keep your extremities warm. Sharing body heat can help prevent frostnip (when your skin is numb and cold but not frozen) from developing into frostbite.
Loosen up:
As your skin thaws, it will swell. So once you are inside, remove all constrictive clothing and jewelry.
Leave the area alone:
Rubbing frostbite skin only does more damage. Don’t even touch it.
Don’t refreeze it:
Frostbite does its harm when your skin thaws, then refreezes. So don’t thaw out your skin unless you know you are staying inside.
Stay away from fire:
Your frozen nerve ending won’t be able to warn you if you start to burn your skin, so don’t try to warm yourself over a flame.
Get into warm water:
Once you are certain that you won’t refreeze the affected area, gradually immerse it in a tub or saucepan of warm (102degree to 105degree F) water. Circulate the water to help keep it in contact with your frozen body part, and replenish the warmth continually. Warming frostbitten fingers and toes can be painful.
Once you have seen your doctor plant on the frostbite area. Aloe works against thromboxanes, substances that constrict blood vessels. When the vessels relax, the frostbitten area heals faster.
  • Rub fresh gel from an aloe vera plant on the frostbitten area. Aloework against thromboxanes, substances that constrict blood vessels, When the vessels relax, the frostbitten area heals faster.
  • Bandage fresh sliced beets onto the frostbitten area to ease pain and tenderness. Leave the beets on until they are dry. Repeat as necessary.
