Tips to Manage ScabiesAlthough scabies can not be controlled without medical treatment, yet few steps can be taken to cotrol it's spread, to speed up cure and to prevent recurrence.
- Treat sexual contacts or relevant family members (who either have either symptoms or have the kind of relationship that makes transmission likely.
- Wash linens and bedclothes in hot water. Because mites don't live long away from the body, it is not necessary to dry-clean the whole wardrobe, spray furniture and rugs, and so forth.
- Cut your nails and clean under them thoroughly to remove any mites or eggs that may be present.
- Scabies mite can also affect animals like dogs, cats etc. Dog mites can easily be transferred to humans. Although mites that infect dogs are not able to complete their life cycle on humans, they can cause quite a bit of itching before they finally die. Dogs with mange should be treated to avoid continuously re-infecting humans.
- In case a child develops scabies, it is better to inform school authorities so the school will be alerted to check for any outbreak.
Home Remedies for Scabies
There are certain natural remedies for Scabies that have been practiced for long and do have some temporary symptomatic relief. However, the fact is that no single home remedy can truely substitute Medical Treatment. Therefore early and complete Medical treatment is strongly recommended after proper diagnosis. Nevertheless, any of the following remedies can be used along with the treatment for symptomatic relief from itching and burning. Beside this above mentioned tips and precautionary measures are also helpful in promoting rapid healing of Scabies.
1.Apricot leaves;
are well known natural remedy for scabies all over the world. For this purpose fresh juice of apricot leaves should be extracted and applied over the infected itchy skin. It has a beneficial effect in relieving most pronounced Scabies symptoms that is itch and burning.
2.Diluted vinegar;
Another natural remedy for Scabies that may work for most people is vinegar. Apply some diluted vinegar to the itchy skin for a week. Scabies Mites can only live within a narrow pH range and the acid from the vinegar is enough to kill them. Also, vinegar may help to alleviate the redness, burning or stinging sensations related with prolonged Scabies disease.
3.Bengal gram flour;
Wash red itchy skin with flour of Bengal gram. Bengal gram flour is a great cleansing agent.
4. Sulphar and coconut oil;
Sulphur has been used in topical Scabies treatment for long. A paste of 2 tsp of sublimed sulphur and 8 tbsp of coconut oil is applied on the red and itchy skin areas. Sulphar is also used as a part of Medical treatments of Scabies in some parts of the world
5. Mint leaves;
Mint is an easily available herb all over the world. For Scabies an easy remedy is to make a paste of fresh mint leaves and apply on the infected itchy skin. This will give fast relief from itching.
6. Soap, alcohal and benzyl benzoate;
This natural remedy uses the principal of old Scabies medication. After a warm bath, part of skin most affected with 'Scabies itch' should be brushed with a mixture of equal parts of soap, ethyl alcohol, benzyl benzoate for five minutes while the skin is still wet. After it dries, once again paint the burning skin with mixture and wash it after 5 minutes with warm water.
7. Drum stick leaves;
Another natural remedy for Scabies are drum stick leaves. For the relief of Scabies itch, extract the juice from 400 - 500 gm of drumstick leaves mix with an equal amount of sesame seed oil. Now boil them till the water dries to some extent. Cool and store, preferably in a glass bottle. Apply daily over the itchy skin, it will give a soothing effect. Both of these have strong anti-microbial properties.
8. Neem leaves paste;
A well known Scabies home remedy in Asia is Neem leaves. Make a paste with fresh or dried neem leaves and add an equal quantity of turmeric powder mixed with mustard oil. This should be applied on entire body below neck and left for an hour or so. Then the person should bath. Repeat for 7- 10 days till all lesions have healed.
9. Peepul tree bark;
The dried bark of a peepul tree (An Indian fig tree) can be powdered fine, strained through a fine sieve and used as a dusting powder on lesions of scabies.
10. Margosa tree;
Tender Margosa tree leaves could be chewed for relief from Scabies.
