The head louse is a brownish-grey, wingless insect that lives in human hair. Smaller than a match head, the head louse lays its eggs (called nits) along the base of the hair shaft, close to the scalp. Head lice feed by sucking blood from the scalp. Their bites may itch severely and sometimes become infected. The partly-white, empty egg cases, which look somewhat like dandruff, are carried along the hair as they grow, so that the egg cases are often found farther from the scalp than the lice themselves.
These insects are easily transmitted from head to head contacts or by sharing combs, brushes, hats or towels. Infestation are common in school children and
people who work with them. These insects prefer to lay their eggs on clean hair and skin.
