Research has shown that excessive intake of sugars results in early wrinkles and rapid skin aging through a process called glycation.

Wrinkle Prevention Thru Diet
Diet has a definitive role in the formation of wrinkles and needs to be modified to enhance the results of antiaging skin care treatments.

For a very long time it is an established faith that an excess of sugar consumption can cause diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay. These can impair the absorption of calcium and minerals. Excess sugar can suppress the immune system and contribute to weight gain. A lifetime of overeating sugars can eventually result in raised triglycerides, disturbed neuronal system and diseased kidneys. These are the effects of too much sugar intake on your internal body but what about the skin. Does sugar spares your skin? The answer is NO.
Recent studies have proven that a lifetime of overeating of sugar can make skin dull and wrinkled. It is found that an excess of sugars either in the form of added sugars or simple carbohydrates can cause early skin aging and more wrinkling.
When we take sugars in the form of either simple sugars that is sucrose (table sugar) and fructose or simple carbohydrates, the end product of their digestion is simple sugars that is glucose, fructose as well as galactose. In case of sweets and simple sugars (potato, rice, bread) there is a rapid rise in blood sugar levels and the resulting blood sugars are likely to combine with protein molecules to form harmful new molecules called advanced glycation end products (AGEs) by a process called glycation. Now these AGEs are implicated in a very long list of age related diseases. As far as our skin is concerned, these cause damage in two ways;
- These can damage the skin protein collagen and elastin which are the main protein responsible for the elasticity and firmness of skin.
- Impairs the body?s ability to produce and utilize anti oxidants making us more prone to damage by free radicals.
- AGEs deactivate the body's natural antioxidant enzymes, leaving skin more vulnerable to sun damage, one of the main cause of skin aging.

As a result the skin loses its elasticity, becomes more susceptible to sun damage and eventually leads to wrinkles, sagging, and loss of youthful skin. The more we eat sugar, the more we are vulnerable to the damaging effects of glycation and the more wrinkles we are likely to get. The skin aging caused by sugars is most likely to affect after the age of 35, because of the reduced tissue regeneration and increased glycation.
How to Prevent Wrinkles Caused by Sugar?
The easiest solution is to cut down sugars from our diet. But this is not as easy to carry out as to declare. In fact we can not completely eradicate sugars from our diet and this is not indeed required. All we need is to;
- Avoid sweets like chocolates, candies and soft drinks.
- Simple carbohydrates like pasta, potato, rice and bread. These are rapidly converted into sugars and result in rapid rise in blood glucose levels.
- Increase protein consumption which may be helpful to control carbohydrate carving.

How to Neutralize the Damage?
If you are above 35, have been taking surplus sugar and other skin aging foods and your skin has started showing the results in the form of sagging and wrinkles, still you can do something to counteract the damage. Following measures can be helpful to recover the youth and beauty of your face at least to a great extent if not completely.
- Top of the list is to modify your diet with less sugars and simple carbohydrates and more proteins and complex carbohydrates.
- Avoid direct sun rays because glycation makes our skin more susceptible to sun damage which in turn is the major cause of skin wrinkling. Always apply a good sunscreen to avoid ultraviolet rays.
- Beside dietary reduction of sugars there are other things that need to be added up to your diet. These have anti glycation role and protect your skin while strengthening new collagen and elastin and restores suppleness back to the skin. These include certain peptides available in the form of anti glycation serums, Vitamin supplements particularly Vitamin B1 and B6, herbs like ginger, thyme and plant extracts.
- Increase the intake of anti oxidant rich foods like green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits and nuts particularly walnuts, these help to over come the free radicals strengthened by AGEs.
- Topical application of anti oxidants is equally important to reduce wrinkles and go back to a supple and youthful skin. You can choose them from your kitchen like green tea or ascorbic acid rich lemon. Another option is to buy a good antioxidant facial cream and stuck to it.
