Scabies is a very contageous pruritic skin condition caused by cutaneous infestation with the mite Sarcoptes Scabei.
INCIDENCE
The incidence of scabies varies on a world scale with hygiene, housing conditions and population movements. Approximately 300 million cases of infestation with scabies occur worldwide annually. In general it can affect any one regardlessof age, gender and personal hygeine, it can affect both man and animals, including dogs, rats, cats ,rabbits etc.
WHAT CAUSES SCABIES?
Scabies is caused by a tiny eight legged "Scabies mite" that is barely visible with the naked eye. The female mite tunnels into the skin (stratum corneum) and lays down the eggs. The female dies after laying her eggs, while the larvae (after 3-4 days)move to the skin surface where they mature and cycle is repeated. The action of the mites moving within the skin and on the skin itself produces an intense itch, furthermore, the presence of the eggs produces a massive allergic response which, in turn produces more itchng.
HOW SCABIES IS TRANSFERRED?
Scabies is highly contageous, almost always transmitted by close contact with an infected person, often throughout an entire household. Transmission of the mites involves close person-to-person contact of the skin-to-skin variety. It is hard, if not impossible, to catch scabies by shaking hands, sharing bedclothes or even touching things that have mites in them. The physical contact required to contract scabies may, of course, be sexual, and scabies is more common among sexually active young people. Scabies mites are very fastidious. They can only live off of a host body for 24 to 36 hours under most conditions.
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS OF SCABIES
The main feature of Scabies is a severe and persistent itch which causes rash the well known "Scabies Rash", that is worse after bathing and at night. The individual lesion may appear superficialy to be like small pimples that may be crusty and red due to scratching. In comparatively older cases, these may look like excoriated papules.
