What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?
Seborrheic dermatitis is derived from the term "Seborrhea" which means "flow of oil". This is a papulosquamous disorder, patterned on the sebum-rich areas of the scalp as waxy patches and may spread to the face and beyond during flare ups. It is also called Seborrheic eczema or Face dandruff, while in babies, it is known as "cradle cap".
INCIDENCE
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common cutaneous disorder occurring in at least 3% to 5% of the population. Dandruff, the less inflammatory form of seborrheic dermatitis, occurs in 50% to 80% of teenagers and adults.
Race: Seborrheic dermatitis occurs in persons of all races.
Sex: The condition is slightly worse in males than in females.
Age: The usual onset occurs with puberty.
* It peaks at age 40 years and is less severe, but present, among older people.
* In infants, it occurs as cradle cap or, uncommonly, as a flexural eruption or erythroderma.
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS OF SEBIRRHEIC DERMATITISScalp; is the part that is involved most and it is probably the second most common cause of itchy scalp (the first one being the head lice).Scalp may show patchy scales of waxy flakes that may vary in colour from white to brownish yellow. In cases of severe dandruff widespread, thick, adherent crusts may be seen. From the scalp, seborrheic dermatitis can spread onto the forehead, the posterior part of the neck, and the postauricular skin.
Skin; may has oily, waxy appearance with patches of red, inflamed, itchy areas that may have greasy scales. Hypopigmentation is seen in blacks. Infectious eczematoid dermatitis, with oozing and crusting, suggests secondary infection.
Are dandruff, seborrhea and seborrheic dermatitis the same?
Dandruff appears as scaling on the scalp without redness. Seborrhea is excessive oiliness of the skin, especially of the scalp and face, without redness or scaling. Patients with seborrhea may later develop seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis has both redness and scaling. Another imprtant remider is that as seborrheic dermatitis is uncommon in preadolescent children, and tinea capitis is uncommon after adolescence, dandruff in a child is more likely to represent a fungal infection. A fungal culture should be completed for confirmation.
