HEREDITY Although every one develops acne at some point during life but inheritance does play a role in determining the severity of lesion.
HORMONES Male sex hormones aggravate acne while female sex hormones relieve it. It is probably due to this reason that males have more frequent and more stubborn types of acne while in females lesions are better during pregnancy and high oral intake of oral contraceptive pills. It is the cyclic hormonal changes in females that explain the cyclic breakouts in certain females as a part of pre-menstrual syndrome.STRESS In some individuals psychological factors may aggravate a pre existing lesion. However the role of stress is still controversial.

CLIMATE The role of climate in acne flare up is controvercial, however most people believe that acne is affected by climate. High humidity and temperature, sweating or prolonged contact with a damp cloth may induce severe relapses in certain individuals.
